As costs for PV systems continue to decline, we will be transitioning to a market with greatly reduced need for government incentives. Depending on market geography, this transition will happen in many locations and at various times over the next five years. At the same time, market growth rates will plateau as funds available for incentives no longer grow as dramatically as in the past. Thus the PV industry is entering a new phase that will require new thinking on the part of all stakeholders from manufacturers and installers to policy makers. This presentation will outline the challenges facing the industry as we transition to an incentive-free environment and take our place as a major source of renewable energy.

Catalyzing Solar Energy Projects in Asia

Like any other emerging technology, solar energy technologies need to be introduced in a structured manner. Too fast an introduction can lead to sustainability issues and collapse while too slow an introduction will lead to costs not coming down and lack of interest amongst countries and stakeholders.                                                                            Recognizing this, the Asian Development Bank has formulated a program called "Asia Solar Energy Initiative" that seeks to promote solar energy technologies through a combination of knowledge management, project preparation, and innovative financing. The program seeks to catalyze about 3,000MW of capacity by 2013 in a sustainable way. One of the key objectives of the ASEI is also to bring down the cost of solar powered electricity to levels comparable with costs of producing hydrocarbon based electricity.
